1. Osun Monarch, Pastor Plead Guilty To COVID-19 Fraud In US

The Apetu of Ipetumodu in Osun State, Oba Joseph Oloyede, and a Nigerian pastor, Edward Oluwasanmi, have pleaded guilty to charges of COVID-19 relief fraud in the United States.

The duo are facing possible prison sentences.

OSUN DEFENDER reports that Oba Oloyede, a US-based accountant and information system expert, was appointed the new Apetu in July 2019.

The monarch and Oluwasanmi were arrested in early 2024 for their roles in a scheme to fraudulently obtain $4.2m in COVID-19 relief funds.

The two men were charged with 13 counts of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, wire fraud, conspiracy to defraud, money laundering, and engaging in monetary transactions in criminally derived property.

They were arraigned before Justice Christopher Boyko of the US District Court of Ohio.

2. Some PDP Chieftains Working Against Me – Adeleke

Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has disclosed that some chieftains of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, are working against his administration.

Adeleke, who does not name the PDP chieftains, said they were some of those who opposed his candidature in the 2022 gubernatorial election.

This was as he urged members of the PDP in the state to remain steadfast and avoid distractions as the administration delivers dividends of democracy and good governance.

OSUN DEFENDER reports that the lawmaker representing Obokun/Oriade Federal Constituency, Wole Oke, recently announced his resignation from the PDP, citing alleged marginalisation of his constituency by the state government.

But the governor while reacting to recent developments within the party in a statement by his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, on Saturday, said he treats all federal constituencies fairly.

3. Police Deny Conducting Raids, Arrests In Osun Communities

The Oyo State Police Command has firmly denied reports alleging that its operatives carried out raids and arrested traditional leaders in Papa, Ogburo, and Ejemu communities within Iwo Local Government Area of Osun State.

In a statement issued by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, CSP Adewale Osifeso, the police described the viral claims as baseless, mischievous, and a desperate attempt to incite unrest among peace-loving residents of the area.

The reports, widely circulated on social media platforms by a certain Emmanuel via The Standard News, had alleged that monarchs, Baales and chiefs were among those arrested by Oyo police officers on April 24.
