5. Ooni Assures Queen Naomi Of God’s Vindication Amid Legal Struggles

The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, has expressed his unwavering support for his ex-wife, Naomi Silekunola, assuring her that God would ultimately vindicate her amid the ongoing legal proceedings, following her involvement in the tragic stampede at a Christmas funfair in Ibadan, Oyo State, on Wednedady, December 4, which led to the deaths of 35 children.

Oba Ogunwusi defended his former wife, stating that she had no intention to harm the children or other participants of the event, and that her goal was solely to bring joy to underprivileged children through the funfair.

Silekunola, along with Alhaji Oriyomi Hamzat, the owner of Agidigbo FM in Ibadan, and Abdulahi Fasasi, the Principal of Islamic High School, Ibadan, where the event took place, are facing charges of conspiracy, causing death by negligence, endangering public safety, and failing to provide proper security and medical services during the event.

On December 24, 2024, an Ibadan Magistrate’s Court ordered the three individuals to be remanded in custody.

On January 7, 2025, when the case was brought before Justice K.B. Olawoyin of the Oyo State High Court, the judge denied them bail and adjourned the decision on their bail applications until January 13, 2025.

However, some have criticized the monarch for not doing enough to prevent her imprisonment.

In response, the Ooni explained that he could not interfere in the legal process beyond offering prayers for his ex-wife.
