Nigerian troop kills six Boko Haram insurgents during a gun battle when the terrorists attempted to overrun a Nigerian Army Forward Operation Base in the Ngwom community, Mafa Local Government Area, about 14 kilometres north of Maiduguri, the Borno State capital.
It was learnt that the base, belonging to troops of the 122 Task Force Battalion, was attacked by the terrorists who came in four gun trucks, but met with resistance from the soldiers.
According to the acting Director, Army Public Relations, Col Sagir Musa, the troops shot six members dead and recovered weapons, including two gun trucks mounted with anti-aircraft guns and five AK-47 rifles.
The terrorists, however, mobilised to neighbouring Kubu village in the Shani Local Government Area of Borno State, where they had another gun duel with troops and lost one fighter.
The army’s spokesperson said in a statement on Saturday that the troops would sustain the momentum of the war against terrorism in the North-East.
Musa said, “Troops of 122 Task Force Battalion, deployed in the Forward Operation Base, destroyed some Boko Haram terrorists when they had a fierce encounter with the terrorists fighting in four gun trucks.
“The bandits had, in the recent past, attempted to attack the same troops’ location but met with stiff resistance. In the encounter, troops captured several weapons. Several insurgents evidently escaped with gunshot wounds.
“Similarly, on the same day, troops, deployed in Gulak, responded to a distress call from the Kubu village in the Shani LGA that terrorists were operating in the village. On getting to the area, one of the bandits was neutralised and calm has been restored.”
