Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has vowed to take a strong stance against the US if President Donald Trump imposes a 25% tariff on Canadian imports.

Trudeau warned that “Canada will respond and everything is on the table”.

The prime minister’s comments came during a cabinet retreat aimed at strategizing how to deal with the new Trump administration and address economic threats from the US.

Trump has signaled that the tariffs could be imposed as early as February 1, citing concerns over migration and illicit drugs.

Hours after taking his oath of office on Monday, he told reporters the punitive tariffs against the two major US trading partners may be imposed as early as February 1.

“We’re thinking in terms of 25 percent on Mexico and Canada, because they’re allowing vast numbers of people — Canada’s a very bad abuser also — vast numbers of people to come in, and fentanyl to come in,” he said in the Oval Office as he signed an array of executive orders.

Trump also signed an order Monday directing agencies to study a host of trade issues including deficits, unfair practices, and currency manipulation.

These could pave the way for further duties.

Trudeau emphasised that Ottawa’s reaction would be “robust and rapid and measured,” with a commitment to match US tariffs dollar for dollar.

He also cautioned that a trade war would have costs for both the US and Canada, with potential losses exceeding 5% of Canada’s GDP, significant job losses, and inflation.

In preparation for the potential tariffs, Canada is considering imposing higher duties on US goods, including steel products, ceramics, glassware, and orange juice. Trudeau’s strong stance is a clear indication that Canada is ready to defend its economic interests in the face of US trade aggression.
