Trump Administration Violated Deportation Court Order – U.S. Judge
A U.S. federal judge has ruled that the administration of President Donald Trump violated a court order by attempting to deport migrants to South Sudan.
Judge Brian Murphy said during a Thursday hearing that a preliminary injunction he issued in April was breached when the Department of Homeland Security notified seven migrants on Monday night of their deportation, giving them less than 24 hours’ notice before placing them on a plane.
The injunction had barred deportations to third countries without adequate time for the individuals to contest the move.
“The department’s actions in this case are unquestionably violative of this court’s order,” Murphy stated, adding that officials involved in the incident could face criminal contempt charges.
Following the ruling, the White House criticised Murphy, accusing him of being part of a group of “activist judges” pushing to release dangerous criminals.
Murphy’s declaration marks one of the strongest judicial rebukes since Trump resumed office in January and relaunched his tough immigration agenda, which has faced repeated legal challenges.
