Two Nurses Arrested After Patients Die from Alleged Wrong Injections
Two nurses have been arrested following the deaths of six- and three-year-old sisters at the General Hospital in Zuru, Kebbi State, on March 18, after allegedly receiving incorrect injections during treatment.
The suspects are currently in police custody in Birnin Kebbi as investigations continue to determine the exact cause of the children’s deaths.
In response, the Kebbi State Government has set up a nine-member panel of inquiry, led by the Commissioner for Information and Culture, Alhaji Yakubu Ahmed.
The panel has begun hearings in Zuru, questioning hospital staff, including Principal Medical Officer Dr. Thomas Gode and Medical Officer Dr. Mohammed Fakai, alongside nurses on duty at the time.
The children’s father, Ibrahim Abdullahi Shuni, and other family members also gave accounts of the incident.
During proceedings, hospital personnel identified communication lapses among staff as a possible factor in the tragedy, highlighting the need for urgent reforms to prevent similar incidents.
The state government also donated N10 million to the bereaved family.
Speaking at the Emir’s Palace in Zuru, Alhaji Ahmed said the contribution was intended to help the family cope with their loss.
“No sum of money can replace the lives lost, but we hope this support shows that the family has not been abandoned,” he said.
The Emir of Zuru, Alhaji Mohammed Sanusi Mikailu Sami, urged the family to remain resilient and described the tragedy as part of God’s will.
He also called on healthcare workers to uphold high professional standards, warning that “negligence that risks human lives is unacceptable. Continuous training is essential for all health personnel.”
Representing the family, Barrister Garba Shehu expressed gratitude to the state government for its intervention and for ensuring a thorough investigation into the deaths.
