Two housewives in the Dakwa community of Bwari Area Council, Federal Capital Territory, were rushed to hospital last week after ingesting a locally-made sexual enhancer in a bid to win back the affection of their husband, who had just taken a third wife.

OSUN DEFENDER reports that the women, whose names are being withheld for privacy, reportedly took a powdered version of a concoction popularly known as kayan mata, a herbal aphrodisiac believed in some quarters to boost a woman’s sexual appeal and enhance male desire.

Findings revealed that the incident occurred barely three days after their husband, Musa Muhammad, returned from Gusau, Zamfara State, where he wedded a new bride.

According to Musa, he received a distress call from his main residence while spending the night at his new wife’s apartment.

“I was called from my main house that my two wives were not feeling fine because I passed the night at a different house where my new bride is residing,” he narrated.

Upon his arrival, he found them writhing in pain. “They were rolling on the ground, groaning with stomach pains,” he added.

Local remedies failed to ease their condition, prompting the husband to rush them to a private clinic in Madalla, Niger State. There, medical personnel diagnosed internal organ damage allegedly linked to the herbal substance. Both women underwent surgery and were eventually discharged on Monday after days of treatment.

Sources disclosed that the two wives had been regular users of the concoction, which they normally took in liquid form mixed with milk. However, on this occasion, they were handed a powdered variant by a local herbalist, now being sought for questioning.

Meanwhile, medical professionals have raised the alarm over the dangers of using unregulated herbal aphrodisiacs.

A nurse at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, Maryam Muhammad, described the concoction as harmful.

“These mixtures often tamper with hormonal balance and may even trigger cancer,” she told Daily Post.

She warned that most vendors are unaware of the actual composition of the mixtures they sell.

“It’s safer for women to rely on natural fruits and balanced diets instead of ingesting unknown substances,” she added.
