Two years after approving the recruitment of 5,000 teachers and 250 education officers, Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has ordered the issuance of appointment letters to the first batch of the newly recruited teachers.

OSUN DEFENDER reports that Adeleke had, on February 16, 2024, approved the recruitment of 5,000 teachers and 250 education officers to serve in both primary and secondary schools, following the endorsement by the State Executive Council.

Following the payment of a non-refundable N2,000 fee, the applicants wrote an examination, and the successful candidates were interviewed between September 9 and 13, 2024.

However, the candidates were not appointed following the interview, with the government instead deploying members of the Imole Youth Corps into schools.

Speaking on why the teachers’ recruitment remained inclusive in July 2025, the state government attributed the delay to the non-release of local government allocations by the Federal Government.

The Commissioner for Education, Dipo Eluwole, made the disclosure at the opening session of a training programme held for teachers and heads of public schools in the state.

Eluwole said the money to be used to recruit teachers was being spent on payment of primary school teachers, local government workers, health workers and five per cent to traditional rulers.

“The money we are supposed to be using for these things is what we are using to pay primary school teachers, local government workers, health workers and five per cent to traditional rulers.

“Everybody is taking their money as when due. That is why we don’t have more teachers in schools. Let us pray for Osun State and our governor, he meant well for the state,” he said.

However, in a move that may finally put a smile on the faces of the candidates, Governor Adeleke, on Wednesday, directed the Commissioner for Education to issue letters of appointment to the first batch of newly recruited teachers in the state.

The governor said the directive gives effect to the decision of the State Executive Council held in December last year.

He stated this while speaking at the Commendation and Solidarity Parade organised by the Stay-in-School Initiative at St. Charles Grammar School, Osogbo.

Adeleke reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening education and ensuring school safety across Osun State.

He described education as the most powerful tool for individual empowerment and sustainable development.

The governor also said the Stay-in-School Initiative, which operates as a school policing and neighbourhood watch programme in line with the Federal Government’s Safe School Initiative, reflects the state’s resolve to protect the future of children through a safe and secure learning environment.
