UK Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, has resigned amid an internal party crisis and mounting pressure from members of his party calling for him to step down, barely two years after he assumed leadership of the country.

Starmer, who led the Labour Party to a landslide electoral victory in 2024, announced his resignation in a broadcast on Monday.

“New leader will be in place before Parliament returns in September, I will remain in post until the contest is complete,” Starmer said.

More than 100 Labour Party members of parliament are reportedly pushing for Starmer’s removal, with growing internal divisions weakening his hold on leadership.

The emergence of his political rival Andy Burnham as the winner of the June 19, 2026 Makerfield by-election is also said to be a significant challenge to his authority within the party.

With Burnham now in Parliament, Starmer risks facing further pressure and possible humiliation from party members demanding his resignation.

Starmer’s popularity has fallen sharply in recent months following intense public criticism over his appointment of Peter Mandelson as British ambassador to the United States, despite intelligence reports alleging past links to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and other controversies, alongside wider concerns over immigration and governance.
