Umahi Threatens to Sack Lagos Contractor Over Slow Road Construction
The Minister of Works, David Umahi, on Sunday warned that he would terminate the contract for the construction of the Ikorodu-Itoki road in Lagos if the contractor failed to follow his directives.
GELD Construction Ltd. is handling the project and Umahi issued the warning during an inspection tour, expressing dissatisfaction with the pace of work.
“I am very disappointed because they are more interested in what is impossible than in cooperating with us to do what is possible at this point.
“How many years do they want to stay here? The game is over. The supervising engineer will risk his job if this project is not started. His duty is to report if the contractor disobeys, and then I will have the contractor arrested,” he said.
The minister directed that night excavation be carried out to ensure smooth traffic flow.
“The road is eight metres wide. We have directed that the first section be excavated at night, filled back with lumps and stone base mixed with cement. It will look like concrete so that traffic can flow seamlessly. We will complete the project section by section,” he said.
Umahi explained that in the first section, five kilometres of the road could be milled and used to build the shoulders.
He admitted that in some areas, constructing shoulders is impossible. “We are going to skip some and do everything working at eight metres at night, milling it and then applying 60 millimetres of binder and 40 millimetres of bearing,” he added.
