Tension gripped Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital, on Tuesday as suspected political thugs attacked and destroyed properties belonging to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the inauguration of the party’s new state executives.

The hoodlums, said to be acting on the instructions of a rival political party, vandalised the party’s Secretariat along Basiri Road, razing a newly decorated building as well as burning canopies, chairs, tables, musical instruments and a motorbike in the process.

Reacting to the incident, ADC National Secretary and former Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, described the attack as a despicable and undemocratic act that ridicules the values of democracy.

“It is unfortunate and shameful that products of a democratic process could engage in such acts in the name of politics. What happened in Ekiti is a terrible decline from democratic decency,” Aregbesola said.

He called on security agencies to protect lives and property in the state and ensure that those behind the attack are brought to justice, adding that democracy must not be undermined by violent actors.

Ekiti State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Sunday Abutu, confirmed the incident, saying the Commissioner of Police has ordered a full-scale investigation to identify and prosecute the culprits.

Despite the attack, the ADC went ahead with the inauguration of its state executives, conducted by Dr. Bamidele Ajayi, while the State Chairman, Mr. Ilesanmi Omolayo, charged members to remain steadfast and united.

Omolayo urged party faithful not to be discouraged by the incident, but to continue working towards ADC’s victory in future elections.

Prominent party members present included former Deputy Governor of Ekiti State, Prof. Olusola Eleka and Hon. Gboyega Aribisogun.
