There is subsisting uneasy calm in the quarters of internet fraudsters otherwise known as ‘yahoo boys’ in the State of Osun, following the death of a 21-year-old apprentice, Idris Ajibola, who died in an accident as a result of a hot chase mounted by security operatives of the Joint Task Force in Osogbo, recently.
The JTF operatives suspected Ajibola and his friends, who were driving in a Toyota Corolla, to be cyber crime members and decided to chase them, which led to an accident.
Since the event, which sparked protests from residents of the state for two days, the ‘yahoo boys’ have remained calm and easy going in total contrast to their usual ways and manners.
OSUN DEFENDER observed that in what seems to be a mourning mood; the internet fraudsters have left alone their social activities and flamboyant lifestyles, while some of them have travelled out of the state.
According to findings, the policemen, who are also always on the trail of the suspected cyber criminals, have also ceased their operations, apparently because of outcries that greeted the circumstances that surrounded Ajibola’s death and many others damages they had caused.
Investigations by the medium revealed that the ‘yahoo boys’ have resorted to riding on commercial motorcycles, instead of driving their cars, obviously to avoid being arrested by the police.
Credible sources, who are close to the suspected internet fraudsters, confided in the medium that they had gone underground since the death of Ajibola.
They said: “The fact is that those ‘magic hands’ people have gone underground since last week. This is because they are afraid of coming out, they believe that the police would come after them because of their protests against Ajibola’s death. Those guys have not been coming out since then.
“Some of them that are going to one or two places are riding Okada. They do not go out with their cars. They have remained calm because they are afraid of the police at present.”
