A professor of microbiology and the Head of the Infectious Diseases Unit at CERID, Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, LAUTECH, Ogbomosho, Oyo State, Adekunle Olowe, has called for urgent action from all stakeholders in preventing Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR).

The professor said there should be more awareness and education to promote responsible antimicrobial use.

He stated this in a statement to mark this year’s World Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) awareness week.

Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) occurs when bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites no longer respond to antimicrobial agents, making infections difficult or impossible to treat.

According to the professor, causes of AMR include overuse and misuse of antimicrobials in humans and animals.

He also said, “lack of access to clean water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH), inadequate regulation and monitoring of antimicrobial use,” can cause AMR.

The university don said that if not adequately and urgently treated, the disease could cause severe illness and death.
