The Enugu State Police Command on Monday confirmed the arrest of a 22-year-old student of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), Emmanuel Gambo, for allegedly murdering a fellow undergraduate, Deborah Sam-Praise Ememem, over a N15,000 disagreement following a sexual encounter.

According to the command’s spokesperson, SP Daniel Ndukwe, the suspect, a second-year student of Material and Metallurgical Engineering, checked into a hotel in Obukpa with the deceased on the night of June 14, 2025.

Trouble reportedly started after a second round of sex, during which the deceased demanded an additional N15,000, having earlier received N5,000.

The altercation escalated, resulting in Gambo strangling her to death.

In a bid to conceal the crime, the suspect wrapped the victim’s body in a towel and a curtain, then hid it under the bed.

Hotel staff discovered the decomposing corpse on June 16 after perceiving a foul odour.

The suspect, who had used a false name and unreachable phone number during check-in, was traced and arrested at his lodge on July 2, 2025, following diligent police investigation.

Items belonging to the deceased, including her iPhone, Redmi tablet, and earbuds, were recovered from the suspect.

The Commissioner of Police, Mamman Bitrus Giwa, commended the detectives for their efforts and urged parents to monitor their children closely while warning youths against social vices.
