Urban Alert Raises The Alarm Over Illegal Mining Business In Osogbo
A non-profit organisation, Urban Alert, has raised the alarm over ongoing illegal mining activities in Osogbo, the Osun State capital.
Urban Alert said the continued activities of illegal miners operating at Ifelagba Community in Owoeba, along Ilesa Garage Area, Osogbo have heavily contributed to the contamination of the Osun River.
It stressed that no action has been taken to arrest the situation despite bringing it to the attention of the state government and the Federal Ministry of Solid Minerals Development.
‘We are saddened by reports of the continued activities of illegal miners operating in Osogbo, the capital of Osun State. These miners are heavily contaminating the Osun River, just a few kilometers from the Osun-Osogbo Grove.
“Despite bringing this matter to the attention of the Osun State Government, National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency, and the Federal Ministry of Solid Minerals Development, no significant action has been taken to address the situation.
“The Ifelagba Community in Owoeba, along llesa Garage Area in Osogbo, just like other communities in the area, remains helpless in the hands of these gold miners.
“We call on Governor Senator Nurudeen Jackson Ademola Adeleke and the Minister of Solid Minerals, @Dele Alake, to urgently protect the people and the environment. Authorities cannot continue to look away,” Urban Alert stated.
