The Esan Descendants Assembly (EDA) Worldwide has condemned the horrific mob killings that took place in Uromi, Edo State, describing the incident as a “tragedy without excuse” and calling for urgent government action to address rising insecurity in the region.

In a statement signed by Prof. G.R.A. Okogun, Chairman of the EDA Worldwide, and Saintmoses Eromosele, the General Secretary, the global body representing Esan sons and daughters expressed deep sorrow over the brutal lynching, in which multiple individuals were burned alive.

The group emphasized that such acts of jungle justice have no place in Esanland, a region known for its culture, wisdom, and respect for the rule of law.

They extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and the communities affected. It also acknowledged the growing frustration among residents due to worsening security conditions, but warned against allowing desperation to lead to further violence.

Urging Governor Monday Okpebholo, the Edo State Police Command, the Department of State Services (DSS), and the Nigerian Army to take decisive action to prevent further bloodshed. The group lamented that the long-awaited commissioning of the Esan Mobile Police squadron barracks has yet to materialize, leaving communities vulnerable to criminal attacks.

“There are moments in a people’s history when words fail, and silence becomes a greater betrayal than speech. This is one of such moments. For a great evil has swept through our land like a wild bushfire, leaving behind ash, anguish, and questions that trouble the soul.

“For many planting seasons now, especially in the past couple of years, Uromi and her sister towns have groaned under the weight of evil: kidnappers striking by night and day, rapists and raiders invading homes and farmlands, killers walking boldly through markets and streets.

“And as our people cried, the silence of those meant to protect us sounds louder than the thunder of approaching war.”

Despite the pain and outrage sparked by the killings, the EDA urged the people of Esanland not to abandon the values that have long defined them.

“We must not feed this madness. No matter how deep our wounds, the way of honour must not be forsaken. Esanland is not a jungle. Let us return to the path of wisdom. Let us say no to mob justice and never again take the law into our own hands.”

The statement concluded with a call for justice—not the justice of revenge, but one delivered through due process of law. “The land cries for justice, not the justice of mobs, but of law. And we, the Esan people, must lead by example.”
