US Military Strikes In Sokoto Renew Calls For Nnamdi Kanu’s Relocation
United States military airstrikes on Christmas Day targeting alleged terrorists in Sokoto State have reignited concerns over the safety of detention facilities in northern Nigeria, prompting the legal team of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu to demand his transfer.
Aloy Ejimakor, Special Counsel to Kanu, said in a statement on X on Friday that the strikes confirm long-standing claims that Sokoto is “riddled with terrorists” and therefore unsuitable for holding high-profile detainees.
“The US military strike against terrorists in Sokoto has finally confirmed that Sokoto is riddled with terrorists and thus was never a safe place of custody for Mazi Nnamdi Kanu,” Ejimakor said.
“It is now more urgent that he be transferred outside the terrorist belt in Northern Nigeria.”
Kanu, who was extradited to Nigeria in 2021, has been at the centre of legal and political disputes, with his supporters repeatedly raising concerns about his safety.
They argue that insecurity in northern Nigeria poses a serious risk to his life and undermines his right to humane treatment.
Security analysts note that Sokoto and neighbouring states have seen increased attacks by armed groups, including bandits and insurgents, though authorities insist security operations remain ongoing.
Kanu is currently held at the Sokoto Correctional Centre following his transfer after Justice James Omotosho sentenced him to life imprisonment for terrorism in November 2025.
He was also handed a 20-year term on count three and a five-year term on count seven, both without an option of fine.
Despite widespread condemnation of the judgment, Kanu has indicated his intention to appeal the conviction and sentence.
