US Threatens To Withdraw From Russia-Ukraine Peace Talks Over Lack Of Progress
The United States has warned it could pull out of the ongoing peace talks between Russia and Ukraine within days if tangible progress is not made.
Speaking in Paris on Friday, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the Biden administration would not continue its peace-brokering efforts indefinitely.
“We’re not going to continue with this endeavour for weeks and months on end. So we need to determine very quickly now, and I’m talking about a matter of days, whether or not this is doable in the next few weeks,” Rubio said after meeting European and Ukrainian leaders.
He emphasised that President Trump had committed significant energy to the process but added that other pressing matters also required attention.
“He has dedicated a lot of time and energy to this… this is important, but there are a lot of other really important things going on that deserve just as much, if not more, attention,” he stated.
Trump had earlier announced that he expects to sign a deal with Kyiv next week, which would give the U.S. access to Ukraine’s mineral resources.
Back in March, SaharaReporters reported that Trump warned Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy against pulling out of the rare earth mineral agreement with the U.S., saying, “If he does that, he’s got some problems. Big, big problems.”
Trump also dismissed Zelenskyy’s NATO ambitions, saying, “He wants to be a member of NATO. He was never going to be a member of NATO. He understands that.”
The U.S. position comes amid heightened tensions over control of Ukraine’s strategic mineral assets and its geopolitical alignments.
