In the aftermath of the tragic funfair incident in Ibadan last December, which resulted in the loss of 35 young lives, the Oyo State Government has issued a stern warning to corporate entities and event organisers planning Valentine’s Day celebrations.

The government emphasises strict adherence to state regulations to prevent a recurrence of such tragedies.

Commissioner for Information, Dotun Oyelade, highlighted concerns over advertisements promoting Valentine’s Day events across various media outlets.

He stressed the necessity for organisers to collaborate with security agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force, Nigeria Civil Defence Corps, Amotekun, and Operation Burst, to ensure comprehensive safety measures are in place.

“All stakeholders planning such events must actively involve security agencies to ensure they have proper logistics in place for seamless gatherings,” Oyelade stated.

He also mandated the involvement of the state Ministry of Health and the Hospitals Management Board, along with private hospitals where necessary, to provide adequate medical support.

Reflecting on the December tragedy, where a stampede at a children’s funfair led to numerous fatalities and injuries, the government said it is taking proactive steps to avert similar incidents.

Oyelade warned that any organiser failing to comply with these directives would face the full wrath of the law.

The government urges all parties to prioritise safety and adhere strictly to the outlined guidelines to ensure a secure and incident-free Valentine’s Day celebration.
