VIDEO: Commuters Forced To Trek After Train Breaks Down In Kogi Forest
A routine train journey to Abuja turned into an unforgettable ordeal on Wednesday when a train travelling through Kogi State broke down in a remote forest, leaving passengers stranded for hours and forcing many to trek through rough terrain.
Among the stranded commuters was Marxist activist Kola Edokpayi, who shared a video on Facebook documenting the experience.
Edokpayi explained that he had chosen to travel by train from Agbor, Delta State, to Itakpe, Kogi State, after being unable to secure a flight to Abuja.
The situation took a turn for the worse when the train reportedly developed technical issues in what passengers referred to as an “evil forest,” an area with no mobile network coverage.
In the video, Edokpayi said, “I couldn’t get a flight to Abuja today, so I decided to board a train from Agbor to Itakpe, Kogi State, en route to Abuja. On getting to an evil forest without a network in Kogi, the train developed technical issues that couldn’t be fixed immediately.
“Passengers became apprehensive while stranded in the forest, which was dominated by herders and their cows. We decided to embark upon an endurance trek to quickly get to town. We trekked for more than 3 hours and still had to walk to the train station.
“What interests me is that all the herders we encountered in the forest were so friendly and assisted us while we were navigating the ‘evil forest.’
“The Federal Government needs to be proactive enough to ensure that the trains are in better condition for the safety of passengers.
“Airline operators are cancelling flights anyhow, we fear kidnappers on the bad roads, and now the train breaks down in an ‘evil forest’ dominated by herders.
