VIDEO: Olu of Warri’s Aide Stops Woman from Shaking Monarch’s Hand
A viral video has surfaced showing an aide to the Olu of Warri, Ogiame Atuwatse III, gently preventing a woman from shaking the monarch’s hand in line with palace protocol.
In the 47-second clip, which began trending on Tuesday, the Olu is seen walking through a lounge with his entourage dressed in traditional red and white Itsekiri attire when the woman stepped forward to greet him.
The aide intervened politely, stopping the handshake.
According to long-standing Itsekiri customs, subjects are not allowed to initiate physical contact with the Olu; any handshake must be at the monarch’s discretion.
The brief interruption did not dampen the mood, as both the woman and the monarch smiled while protocol was observed.
Ogiame Atuwatse III, who became the 21st Olu of Warri in 2021, is known for blending tradition with modern engagement.
Despite his global outreach and diplomatic presence, he continues to uphold centuries-old Itsekiri customs within the palace.
