Vigilantes Allegedly Torture OSPOLY Student To Death In Osogbo

Some yet-to-be-identified officials of the Osun State vigilante group have allegedly tortured a student of Osun State Polytechnic, Iree, Oluwatobi Osundeyi, to death.

The incident which has thrown the family, friends and colleagues of the deceased into mourning, it was gathered occured at the Agunbelewo area of Osogbo, the state capital, on December 29, 2024.

According to an eyewitness who preferred not to be named, Osundeyi was stopped alongside his friends by the vigilantes who queried them for moving around at night.

The eyewitness said all the pleas of the three people fell on deaf ears, adding that the vigilantes tortured Osundeyi until he gave up the ghost.

He said, “Oluwatobi and his two friends were returning from Osun mall. They were stopped by two vigilantes at Bekam School junction, opposite MOE Hotel, Agunbelewo, in Osogbo. They were queried by the vigilantes for roaming at late hours. They apologised but the vigilantes insisted that the Landlords’ association of the community must clear them before they could be freed to leave.

“They shot into the air three times to call the attention of the community Landlords association’s Chairman, but no one came out. After some minutes, the two vigilantes dragged Oluwatobi to a dark place and tortured him till he fell and eventually died before he could get any medical attention.”

The Student Union Government (Caretaker) of OSPOLY, also confirmed the incident in a statement on Monday.

The school SUG expressed shock and concern about the circumstances surrounding the untimely passing of Osundeyi.

The statement condoned with the family of the deceased and called for justice.

Speaking with OSUN DEFENDER, the OSPOLY SUG Chairperson, Ajoke Olaniyi,  further noted that “we received the devastating news of the passing of one of us, Osundeyi Oluwatobi, who allegedly died under a very suspicious circumstance. While we have reached out and condoned families of the deceased, we are determined to get to the root of the matter, and get justice for Oluwatobi.

“We are calling on relevant security agencies to intervene in the investigation of the untimely death of Osundeyi Oluwatobi. All we want is justice.”, Olaniyi added.

Speaking with OSUN DEFENDER, a younger sister to the deceased, Osundeyi Ayomide, said the case has been reported to the police and has already been transferred to the Osun state Criminal Investigation Department.

When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Mrs Yemisi Opalola, said the police is working on the case.
