Amid growing tension and rising insecurity in Plateau State, former youth leaders under the aegis of Plateau Youth Council (PYC) Veterans have raised an urgent alarm over what they described as a full-scale humanitarian disaster, warning that the state is bleeding while government looks on.

At a press conference held in Jos, the group, led by Comrade Adamu Kesuwo, decried the wave of violent killings ravaging communities across the state, noting that between 2023 and February 2024, no fewer than 1,300 people, including over 500 women and 260 children, had lost their lives.

They further disclosed that over 30,000 people have been displaced from their ancestral homes due to the continuous attacks.

“We are tired of town hall meetings and empty promises,” Kesuwo lamented. “This is not a communal clash or a farmer-herder conflict — this is outright genocide. What more do we need to prove the existence of a calculated effort to wipe out indigenous people from their lands?”

Rejecting recent calls for a state of emergency in Plateau, the group condemned comments made by Prof. Tukur Muhammed Baba, spokesperson of the Arewa Consultative Forum, describing them as insensitive and counterproductive.

Instead, they urged both the federal and state governments to enforce the Plateau State Anti-Land Grabbing Law and impose a total ban on open grazing.

They called for improved security measures driven by intelligence and demanded an independent investigation into the killings by the United Nations.

“Our people are tired, frustrated, and abandoned. The world must intervene before more lives are wasted,” the veterans concluded.
