The All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate for Edo State, Monday Okpebholo, is at the center of social media buzz following a major gaffe during a campaign rally in Ovia-north Local Government Area on Thursday.

Okpebholo, while addressing concerns about the security situation in the state, mistakenly promised to “provide insecurity,” a statement that has since gone viral.

The incident occurred shortly after Senator Adams Oshiomhole, representing Edo North, highlighted the challenges local farmers face due to worsening security conditions.

Oshiomhole told the crowd, “This land is blessed with huge arable land, but our farmers cannot go to the farm because of insecurity.”

Okpebholo, responding to the concerns, intended to assure the audience of his commitment to improving the security landscape if elected. However, in a significant slip of the tongue, he declared, “We’re going to provide you with insecurity,” instead of promising security improvements.

The crowd reacted swiftly, and a visibly alarmed Oshiomhole was seen signaling to Okpebholo to correct his mistake.

Realizing his error, Okpebholo quickly clarified his statement. “We are going to provide you with security; we are going to fight insecurity,” he corrected, adding, “We’re going to make sure that the evil ones are out of our land. This land does not belong to kidnappers.”

Despite his quick recovery, video clips of the moment have spread widely on social media, drawing both criticism and humor. Many users have mocked the candidate, while others questioned his readiness for leadership.

This blunder is not the first setback for Okpebholo in his campaign. Just a day earlier, he faced backlash over a different controversial statement, complicating his efforts as the September 21 governorship election nears.

On Friday, another video surfaced in which Okpebholo was heard saying he would repair interstate roads and then claim double the amount from the federal government if elected.

This, too, sparked negative reactions online, with critics questioning his transparency and accountability.

As the election date approaches, Okpebholo is competing against notable candidates like Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party (LP), along with 14 other contenders.
