“We’ve Switched Off Everything” – APC Chieftain Laments High Electricity Tariff

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Joe Igbokwe, has decried the rising cost of electricity in the country, particularly under the recently enforced Band A category, describing the situation as unbearable for many Nigerians.

In a post on his official Facebook page, the former Lagos State government official lamented that consumers, including himself, have been compelled to switch off electrical appliances such as air conditioners, refrigerators and lighting systems in a bid to manage the soaring bills.

“I pray that PBAT [President Bola Ahmed Tinubu] will revisit the Electricity Band A matter. I do not think Distribution Companies are making the money they expected because we are switching off ACs, fridges, lights. Take all to Band B, make more money,” he said.

His remarks come in the wake of the 300 per cent electricity tariff increase approved by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, in April 2024, which raised the cost for Band A customers from N68 to N225 per kilowatt-hour.

The revised tariff, which took effect on April 1, primarily targets urban areas and commercial hubs, where power supply is expected to be more stable.

Despite the assurance of improved electricity delivery under the new pricing structure, many consumers have continued to express dissatisfaction, citing the economic pressure the hike has placed on households and small businesses. Some have questioned the rationale behind the sharp increment amidst an already difficult cost of living.
