Osun State, a gem nestled in the heart of southwest Nigeria, bounded by the states of Kwara on the northeast, Ekiti and Ondo on the east, Ogun on the south and Oyo on the west is long overdue for transformation.
Its rich cultural heritage, agricultural prowess, and strategic location among its sister states created in 1991 by the then Head of State, General Ibrahim Babangida, offer tremendous potential for growth.
However, to truly unlock this potential, Governor Ademola Adeleke must focus on the development of mega cities across the state, as such an initiative will not only boost the economy but also enhance the quality of life for the residents, positioning Osun as a hub of innovation and prosperity in Nigeria.
Mega cities are important drivers of economic development. They serve as engines for growth, attracting investments, industries, and talent.
Governor Adeeke could create centralized hubs of commerce and technology that would foster entrepreneurship, provide employment opportunities, and encourage both local and foreign investments, by developing key urban areas such as Osogbo, Ile-Ife, Ilesa, and among others into mega cities.
Osun, state of the living spring, blessed with untapped natural and human resources, but without much modern infrastructure and urban planning, these resources remain underutilized.
There is a great need for Adeleke to develop Osun mega cities more because it would not only modernize the state’s infrastructure but also enhance connectivity within the state and across the region, which would make Osun a more attractive destination for businesses looking for a base in Nigeria’s southwest.
Transforming Osun’s cities into mega hubs would stimulate industries like construction, manufacturing, technology, and services, as one of its key benefits is job creation.
With Governor Adeleke’s strategic focus on key sectors such as agriculture, tourism, and technology, the state can diversify its economy beyond its current primary reliance on federal allocation. By harnessing technology and modernizing farming practices, Osun could even become an agro-industrial powerhouse, exporting processed goods rather than raw materials.
The ripple effect of these developments would be profound. As cities grow, so does the demand for skilled and unskilled labour, spurring educational reforms and vocational training programs.
This influx of opportunities could significantly reduce unemployment rates and curb rural-urban migration, as people would no longer need to leave Osun for better opportunities in Lagos or Abuja.
Furthermore, in today’s digital age, smart cities are the future. Governor Adeeke’s vision for mega cities should include a focus on technology and innovation.

This can be achieved through public-private partnerships to create tech hubs and innovation centres where young entrepreneurs and startups can thrive.
Encouraging tech-driven industries such as fintech, e-commerce, and renewable energy can place Osun on the global map as a leader in technological advancement.
By promoting a culture of innovation, Osun can attract talent from across Nigeria and beyond, creating a dynamic environment that fosters creativity, problem-solving, and enterprise.
These tech hubs could also help solve local challenges such as energy access, healthcare delivery, and education, providing homegrown solutions to Osun’s unique needs.
Away from technology, Osun is home to iconic cultural landmarks, including the Osun-Osogbo Sacred Grove, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the ancient city of Ile-Ife, regarded as the origin of the Yoruba civilization.
By developing tourism infrastructure such as hotels, resorts, and cultural centres, Governor Adeeke can boost Osun’s tourism appeal and generate revenue for the state, as these cultural assets could be leveraged to drive tourism development as part of the megacities project.
Investing in tourism also promotes cultural preservation, allowing future generations to engage with and appreciate their heritage.
Additionally, it brings global attention to Osun, positioning the state as a vibrant, diverse, and historically rich destination for tourists, researchers, and cultural enthusiasts.
Another germain aspect of mega city development is improving the quality of life for residents. This involves modernizing healthcare, education, and transportation systems.
The Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeeke, must prioritize building world-class healthcare facilities, ensuring access to quality medical care for all citizens.
Similarly, a focus on educational infrastructure particularly in science, technology, engineering, among others, would prepare the next generation for the competitive global economy.
In terms of transportation, Osun’s road networks must be upgraded to reduce congestion and improve connectivity. Developing rail lines and modern public transport systems would make commuting easier, thereby enhancing productivity.
Additionally, Governor Adeeke should explore renewable energy solutions to address the state’s power challenges, ensuring consistent electricity supply for households and businesses.
Recall that during his installation as the Asiwaju of Ede, in his home town, the Governor vowed to transform the status of five major towns in the state into mega cities within a short period.
According to him, very soon all big towns in Osun State will become cities. Ife will become a city, Ilesa will become a city, Ile-Ife will become a city, Iwo will become a city, Ikirun will become a city, Ila will become a city.
“I will carry the light of positive transformation from towns to villages and from cities to rural areas across our dear state”
However, the development of mega cities in Osun is not just a lofty dream but a realistic strategy for long-term growth and sustainability. Governor Adeeke has the opportunity to transform Osun into a leading state in Nigeria, where innovation, culture, and economic opportunity thrive side by side.
With proper planning, investment, and political will, Osun’s mega cities can become beacons of progress, offering a higher standard of living for its people and attracting global attention as a center for culture, business, and innovation.
