Why I Am Supporting Nigerian Army – Olowu Of Kuta
By Solomon Odeniyi
The Oluwu of Owu Kuta, Oba Adekunle Oyelude Makama has revealed why he had been lending support to the men of the Nigerian Army.
Oba Makama, who spoke exclusively with OSUN DEFENDER yesterday said there is need for him and other citizens of the country to appreciate Nigerian soldiers for their efforts against insurgency as well as protecting the nation against external aggression.
Describing his support as unusual, Makama said it would spur the men of the Nigerian Army to give their all in the defence of the people and the country.
He said: “I have been speaking in support of the military because of the work they are doing. They are doing a great job. The military are going beyond defending the territorial integrity of the country to building the nation. They have also done well in the fight against insurgency in the country.
“Seeing a traditional ruler always in support of the military is unusual. It is to appreciate their efforts and spur them to do more. I am happy to lead this unsolicited support. They deserve our support.”
Speaking on the role of traditional ruler in community development, Oba Makama enjoined monarchs in the state to see the institution as a platform to engender development in their various communities.
He added that gone were the days when traditional rulers were served by their subjects, saying that kings now serve their subjects and ensure development in their community.
Oba Makama said: “The traditional institution has changed. In those days, it was the people that served their leaders but reverse is the case now. The King now serves the community. He must do whatever will bring development to his community and the people, and as well ensure the prestige of the stool is being maintained.
“The traditional rulers must also be open-minded to their subjects. God has given every traditional ruler an assignment of nation building, which they must diligently do.”
