The arrested leader of the proscribed Indigenous People Of Biafra, (IPOB) today revealed the reason why he jumped bail and escaped from the country.
Kanu was charged with terrorism and treasonable felony brought against him by the federal government.
While standing before Justice Binta Nyako for the continuation of his trial, Kanu sought permission to address the court, and his wish was granted.
The IPOB leader subsequently told the court that he needed to run out of the country when his house was unlawfully invaded by security men with his life seriously threatened.
He alleged that he would have been killed along with others on the day of the invasion if not for the wisdom he applied to jump out of the country.
The federal government’s counsel, Shuaib Labaran had earlier told the court that Kanu jumped the bail granted by the court to escape trial by running out of the country.
Labaran thereafter applied to the court for an order to remand Kanu in the custody of the Department of State Service (DSS).
He claimed the order was necessary because lawyers to Kanu were yet to be abreast of his re-arrest.
Justice Binta Nyako thereafter granted the request and ordered that Kanu be remanded in the custody of DSS till July 26 for the continuation of his trial.
An army of photographers who were waiting to take Kanu’s photographs were disappointed when he was taken away in handcuffs through a special back gate reserved for Judges and VIPs.
