Why Ibom Air Assault Case Not Same As KWAM 1 Incident – NCAA Reveals, Distances Self From Life Ban On Passenger
The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority has clarified that the case involving Comfort Emmanson, the passenger accused of assaulting Ibom Air crew members, is different from the recent incident involving Fuji musician, Wasiu Ayinde, popularly known as KWAM 1.
Speaking during an X Space session on Monday, NCAA’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Mike Achimugu, said the regulatory body did not instruct Ibom Air or the Airline Operators of Nigeria to prosecute or impose a life ban on Emmanson.
He explained that the airline acted independently, based on available evidence, while investigations are still ongoing.
According to him, the carrier had every right to blacklist the passenger after reviewing video footage that allegedly showed her hitting a cabin crew member and resisting those who tried to restrain her.
Achimugu stressed that cabin crew members are entitled to the same courtesy and protection as passengers, describing the incident as a clear breach of acceptable conduct on board.
He added that the Ibom Air case was handled differently from KWAM 1’s, where ValueJet opted not to press charges, prompting the NCAA to petition the authorities.
He further noted that airlines have the right to pursue prosecution or settle matters amicably, insisting that the Commission’s role is to ensure due process while upholding safety and discipline in the industry.
