With the shock announcement of the decision of Chelsea winger, Victor Moses to quit the Super Eagles’ despite still having some of his best years ahead, AOIFootball.com looks at key factors that led to his early retirement.
At just 27, Moses was arguable one of Nigeria’s best player ever since he made his debut in 2012 and will undoubtedly go down as one of the country’s best wingers despite playing for just six years.
However, a close source to the player revealed that his decision to retire was hastened by the uncertainty regarding Nigerian football, as well as the desire to stay closer to his family which Moses himself highlighted in his statement upon announcing his retirement.
“I feel that now is the right time to step away in order to be able to focus fully on club career and my young family as well as to allow the next generation of Super Eagles stars the opportunity to step up and to flourish. We are blessed as a nation to have so many exciting young players coming through and now is their time,” Moses stated.
Having informed Gernot Rohr and the federation of his desire to quit the national team, it is understood that both the they and the technical crew will respect the player’s decision as the country bids to return to the Nations Cup after failing to qualify for the last two editions.
Moses made is international debut for Nigeria in 2012, playing a key role in Nigeria’s AFCON 2013 triumph. He also represented Nigeria at two World Cups, scoring in the Eagles’ last game against Argentina in St. Petersburg.
