Wike-Fubara Tension Not Our Concern, Says APC Chairman
The national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Nentawe Yilwatda, has stated that the political tension between Nyesom Wike and Siminalayi Fubara falls outside the party’s jurisdiction.
Yilwatda made the remark on Tuesday during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today programme.
“When it comes to the issue between Wike and Fubara, it’s not within my purview as the national chairman of APC. Wike is in PDP, Fubara is in APC,” he said.
The APC chairman explained that the impeachment controversy in Rivers State concerns only members of the party in the state House of Assembly.
“The issue of impeachment is not about Wike now; it concerns APC house of assembly members. That is something I can discuss. It’s an internal matter, and we have mechanisms within APC to resolve such issues,” Yilwatda added.
He also urged that internal disagreements be handled discreetly and maturely.
“We don’t put these discussions in the public. Issues can be resolved through in-house activities that require maturity to address,” he said.
Asked if Wike poses a challenge to the ruling party, Yilwatda responded: “never, never.”
The tension began in December 2025 when the FCT minister started campaigning against Fubara’s re-election, accusing the governor of reneging on an agreement they had signed before President Bola Tinubu lifted the emergency rule in Rivers State.
Lawmakers aligned with Wike also accused Fubara of spending state funds without approval, prompting impeachment proceedings against him and Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu over allegations of “gross misconduct.”
On January 23, a Rivers State high court adjourned the case indefinitely, ruling that the Court of Appeal must first address pending appeals filed by the Speaker and other lawmakers, effectively halting the impeachment process.
