Wike Labels Peter Obi Anti-Democratic Over Refusal To Conduct LG Polls As Governor

FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, has described former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, as anti-democratic for failing to conduct local government elections during his eight years in office.

Speaking at the Anglican Church in Asokoro, Abuja, on Sunday, Wike criticised Obi for declaring that democracy is not working in Nigeria, despite not upholding its tenets while in office.

“Let’s tell ourselves the simple truth. Some of you have sympathy for who you don’t know out of emotion,” Wike said.

“You say Peter Obi will be president; president where? For eight years, he was governor; he never conducted local government elections. Eight good years. That one was democracy?”

Wike, a former Rivers governor, said Obi should not blame the current system when he denied citizens grassroots representation during his tenure.

“Now they will come out and begin to talk, democracy is not working. But it worked under you alone, being governor and chairman of local governments—only one man,” he added. “The time has passed. They won’t have that opportunity again.”

Wike’s comments come as Obi aligns with opposition figures under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition to challenge President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 general election.

He dismissed the coalition as driven by sentiment and political ambition.

Meanwhile, Obi defended his record, explaining that his administration was legally restrained from conducting local government polls for more than six years.
