Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has travelled to the United Kingdom for medical attention after being diagnosed with congestive heart failure, sources told SaharaReporters.

Doctors reportedly recommended a bypass surgery, but Wike declined over fears of being away from office for too long and the possibility of being replaced in his absence.

One source said, “Wike has travelled to the UK to seek medical attention. They said he’s got congestive heart failure, which is being managed. He refused to do the bypass surgery recommended because he doesn’t want to be gone for too long or replaced.”

The development comes amid questions over his health and ability to continue in office.

In April 2021, while serving as Governor of Rivers State, Wike had declared that there was no need for him to travel abroad for treatment, insisting that the Government House in Port Harcourt was fully equipped.

He said at the time, “If we have all these things here, why do we have to travel? Why will I go out to do my check when I have all the facilities in Government House? I don’t need it.”

That same year, Wike stressed the government’s duty to provide quality healthcare for citizens while inspecting the Cancer and Cardiovascular Centre in Port Harcourt. He argued that Nigerian doctors could deliver effectively if given the right facilities and incentives.

Earlier this year, reports claimed he collapsed and was flown abroad, but Wike dismissed the story, saying his political opponents fabricated it.

“There was never a time I collapsed. There was never a time anybody took me anywhere for medical attention. People who spread such rumours should focus on reality,” he said in April.

The minister insisted he was being targeted, describing his critics as “political detractors” bent on distracting Nigerians from pressing issues.
