Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, has called on the Federal Government to apologise to Yoruba Nation activist, Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, over the 2021 raid on his Ibadan residence.

Igboho’s home in Soka, Ibadan, Oyo State, was raided on July 1, 2021, by a joint team of operatives from the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigerian Army during former President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.

The operation followed allegations that the activist was stockpiling arms.

Soyinka condemned the raid as “unlawful and criminal,” noting that it resulted in the deaths of two of Igboho’s aides and the arrest of 13 supporters.

In a video shared by Igboho’s media aide, Olayomi Koiki, Soyinka urged the government to stop treating the activist as a criminal and instead admit its mistake.

“My advice is not so much to Igboho as it is to the government. They should stop pursuing this person as a criminal because they began by acting in a criminal fashion against him,” Soyinka said.

He added that any attempt to prosecute Igboho would embarrass the government.

Soyinka also clarified media reports that Igboho was “in hiding,” saying he had gone underground to protect himself while continuing his cause.

“I am talking about what Igboho originally set out to do: to protect and defend his people and make it clear to aggressors that they are not lords over this nation or any part of it beyond what the Constitution permits,” he said.

He concluded that Igboho should be allowed to decide his next steps, warning that prosecuting him would only backfire on the government.
