World Athletics Championships: Tobi Amusan Reaches Semi-final Of 100m Hurdles
Nigeria’s sprint queen, Tobi Amusan, began her title chase at the ongoing World Athletics Championships in Tokyo on a brilliant note, easing into the semi-final of the women’s 100 metres hurdles.
The world record holder clocked 12.53 seconds on Sunday to win her heat comfortably, finishing ahead of Devynne Charlton of the Bahamas and Italy’s Elena Carraro, who placed second and third respectively.
Despite registering only the fifth-best reaction time to the starting gun, the Ogun State-born athlete quickly took charge of the race and powered through the line, showcasing her dominance and composure.
Amusan has now been drawn in Heat 2 of the semi-final, where she will go head-to-head with the Netherlands’ Nadine Visser, ranked third in the world. Ranked ninth globally, Amusan is eyeing a strong finish as she continues her quest to reclaim gold for Nigeria.
Meanwhile, compatriot Oyesade Olatoye bowed out of the hammer throw event after failing to secure a spot in the final.
The U.S.-born athlete, who switched allegiance to Nigeria in 2019, managed a best throw of 68.82m, placing 10th in Group A of the qualification round.
