The Osun State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists has called for absolute independence and protection of all Journalists discharging their assigned duties.
The council also advocated better welfare and working conditions for media workers and further enforcement of the Freedom of Information Act.
The State Chairman and Secretary of the Union, Comrade Wasiu Ajadosu and Adeyemi Aboderin in a statement jointly signed on the occasion of the 2024 World Press Freedom Day, emphasized that roles of Journalists and the media in information dissemination and development of the nation cannot be overemphasized.
The statement notes the various hazards Journalists go through sometimes in the discharge of their duties to cover stories as the watchdogs of society, calling for more respect for practising journalists in order to enable them discharge their duties professionally.
The statement explained that as the fourth Estate of the Realm, the media should also continue to hold the government accountable to the people and be cautious while discharging their duties with the current national economic, security and fuel crisis.
