The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), zone B has reiterated the need for the Federal Government and the National Assembly to protect the rights of Nigerian Journalists.
Then union also enjoined journalists to demonstrate high level professionalism in the discharge of their duties.
The zone also called on the federal government and the National Assembly to make the rights of Nigerian Journalists a priority in the scheme of things in the country.
In a statement released by the Vice President of the NUJ in the zone, Comrade Cosmas Olalekan Oni and the zonal secretary, Bamigbola Gbolagunte to mark this year’s World Press Freedom Day, the union urged employers of Journalists in the country to make the welfare of Journalists a priority.
Besides, the union tasked the National Assembly to enact laws that will make welfare of Journalists working in the country a priority and also protect their lives, while carrying out their professional responsibilities.
The NUJ in the zone which comprises of the six states of the South West also called on Journalists to be more proactive and responsible in the discharge of their duties, even as the union warned against promotion of fake news and hate speech by Journalists.
“In this era of social media which gives room for fake news and promote hate speech, journalists must live up to expectation by standing by the truth and also be fair and accurate in their reportage,” the statement added.
Also, the union enjoined media practitioners to embrace the truth all the time and be guided by the ethics guiding the profession of journalism.
