The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Nentawe Yilwatda, has emerged as the new National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) following his nomination and election by the members of the National Executive Committee (NEC).

Yilwatda, a former university lecturer, emerged as the consensus candidate after a late-night meeting in Abuja between President Bola Tinubu and APC governors.

The chairman of the Progressive Governors’ Forum, Governor Hope Uzodimma, nominated him for the position, and the motion was seconded by the speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen.

The motion was then put to a voice vote and passed. He was immediately after sworn-in.

The 56-year-old, who hails from Plateau State, was the APC’s governorship candidate in the state during the 2023 general elections.

His election complies with the party’s zoning arrangement, which allocated the chairmanship to the North-Central zone.

Party insiders said his Christian faith also influenced his emergence, with APC leaders seeking to balance religious representation at the top level.

Before joining politics, Yilwatda was an engineering lecturer at the Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi, and served as a Resident Electoral Commissioner for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) between 2017 and 2021.

Although, he lost the 2023 Plateau governorship election, President Tinubu later appointed him Minister of Humanitarian Affairs.
