The Zamfara State Government has promised to restore the montly allowances to National Youth Service Corps(NYSC) members serving in the state.
This was disclosed by the state’s Commissioner for Youths, Sports and Skills Acquisition, Alhaji Abdullahi Gurbin-bore on Wednesday in Gusau at the 2018 corps employers workshop organised by the state NYSC office stressing that it was part of its commitments to improve the welfare of the corps members.
The state government stopped the payment of the allowance in 2015. Gurbin-bore, who is the Chairman of the state NYSC Governing Board, said that the government had recognised the contributions the NYSC scheme had brought to the development of the state.
“That is why the board is working with all stakeholders towards improving the welfare of the corps members in the state.
“Apart from efforts we are making to restore the state government allowance for corps members, we are also making efforts to improve the standard of the facilities at the NYSC Permanent Orientation camp in Tsafe.
“You know, we have concluded the first phase of the renovation of the camp; we are also striving to get approval for the second phase of the renovation project.
“I want to use this opportunity to commend all corps employers in the state for not only accepting the corps members posted to them, but also fulfilling their responsibilities of providing accommodation or paying money in lieu,’’ he said.
In her keynote address, Mrs Amoni Ada who represented the Director-General, Brig.-Gen. Sulaiman Kazaure, said that the workshop was one of the activities of the scheme, to strengthen mutual capacity for effective management of the corps members.
“Therefore, the corps employers’ workshop is not only to appreciate the enduring partnership between the scheme and employers, but also to identify the challenges in corps administration and proper solutions,’’she said.
Earlier, the state NYSC Coordinator, Hajiya Walida Isa described the forum as a medium to intimate the employers of the new policy thrust and procedure with regard to the day-to-day operations of the scheme.
“This workshop with the employers will provide a better understanding of the NYSC and not just stories based, but on interactions with corps members posted to them.
“I am grateful to state here that over the years, the NYSC management in Zamfara has been having hitch free working relationship with all corps employers”, he said.
