Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has reportedly agreed to replace Ukraine’s ambassador to the United States, Oksana Markarova, in what appears to be an effort to appease US President Donald Trump.

According to a report by the Financial Times, the decision followed a recent phone conversation between Zelensky and Trump.

Discussions are ongoing between both countries to agree on a suitable replacement, with approval from both sides required before an announcement is made.

Markarova, who has served in Washington since 2021, has come under criticism from some Republican figures who accuse her of being too closely aligned with the Democratic Party.

Her removal is seen as a strategic move by Zelensky, especially at a time when the United States has withheld previously approved arms shipments to Ukraine, even as Russia continues relentless missile and drone strikes.

The report adds that Zelensky is expected to name her successor next week as part of a wider cabinet reshuffle.

Since the outbreak of the war, the Ukrainian president has made several changes to his cabinet to adapt to evolving challenges.

A senior Ukrainian official told the Financial Times that Zelensky’s goal is to appoint someone who can successfully negotiate with both the White House and Congress.

Among the contenders are Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal and Defence Minister Rustem Umerov.

Former EU diplomat Balázs Jarábik noted that the changes appear aimed at managing rising political, economic, and social pressures rather than signaling a major policy shift.
