2027: Your Tickets Are ‘Bread Labels’ If Oyebamiji Fails To Win – Basiru Tells National, State Assembly Candidates
- Throws Shade At APC Chieftains Maligning Civil Servants
The National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress, Senator Ajibola Basiru, has urged APC members in Osun State to work hard to ensure the party’s success in the August 15 gubernatorial election.
Basiru said the victory of the APC candidate, Mr Bola Oyebamiji, would pave the way for the party’s National Assembly and State Assembly candidates in the 2027 general elections.
He made the remarks on Friday while hosting Local Government Education Authority chairmen and board members at his residence in Osogbo.
The former senator said he lost his re-election bid in 2023 because of the outcome of the 2022 gubernatorial election. He warned National Assembly and State Assembly candidates that their tickets might become useless if the APC governorship candidate fails to win on August 15.
He said, “We must work hard towards the governorship election. I am not one of those saying we want to ‘throw the ball into an empty goalpost.’
“I don’t believe in automatic victory. There is nothing like that. Wherever we are supposed to work, we should work, and we should beg those who are angry.
“If anyone had the chance to win a National Assembly seat in 2023, it was me, Ajibola Basiru. However, because we are not in power at the state level, it became very hard.
“People who are not on the ballot have nothing to lose. Therefore, supporters of those on the ballot must ensure they do not fight them.
“If we do not work for Oyebamiji to emerge on August 15, all those holding Senate and House of Representatives tickets are just holding bread labels.”
Basiru also distanced the party from members maligning civil servants in the state, noting that such members do not represent the party’s position.
“Those who went on radio and asked how many civil servants there are in the state did not represent the All Progressives Congress. The party did not send them; they only spoke for themselves, and it seems they do not understand.
“I respect civil servants, and they have influence in the state. They are the elite, and people tend to follow whatever they say. Whoever is boasting now should calm down until after August 15,” he added.
