The management of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, has extended the calendar of the 2022/2023 rain semester academic session by two weeks.

This decision was made during a meeting in the university’s Senate Building, where the management deliberated on the issue. In a statement released after the meeting, the management explained that the resumption week was disrupted by industrial action from the Non-Academic Staff of the university, leading to a complete halt of academic activities on campus.

The statement read, “The Rain Semester Lectures were scheduled for 12 weeks, running from March 18 to June 7, 2024. However, the first week of lectures was faced with national industrial disputes by the non-academic staff, locking up access to holding classes.

“Although important public holidays are inevitable, a particular holiday, erroneously appropriated, deprived delivery of lectures for a whole week. The scheduled lecture period was thus truncated to 10 weeks, amidst the unsteady presence of members, occasioned by the weakened staff strength and the need to process examination results of the preceding semester.

“Consequently, members have requested the restoration of at least the lost two weeks, to enable them to complete essential contents of their classes adequately.

“The Committee of Deans, after an exhaustive deliberation on the significance of the request and its implications on the current university calendar, particularly with respect to orchestrating the stability that would provide opportunities for adequate invigorating rest, recommended that the lecture periods for the Rain Semester, 2022/2023 Academic Session, be extended for two weeks. Other statutory meetings will be sustained as earlier planned, as far as feasible.”
