The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has reported the vandalisation of over 18 transmission towers between January 9 and 14, 2025, across Rivers, Abia, and Kano States.

In a statement issued by Ndidi Mbah, TCN’s General Manager of Public Affairs, the company expressed deep concern over the damage caused to its infrastructure.

“Routine patrols by linesmen on January 10 uncovered damage to Towers 171–181 and Tower 184 along the Alaoji/Owerri 132kV line in Rivers State,” said Emmanuel Okpa, General Manager of the Port Harcourt Region.

Similarly, in Abia State, towers 160–162 on the Alaoji/Umuahia 132kV line, which was under repair, were stripped of bolts, nuts, and structural members, as reported by Azuh Lucky, Head of the Lines Department.

The situation was no different in Kano State, where vandals targeted Towers 105–107 on the Katsina-Gazoua 132/33kV transmission line on January 9.

These incidents have compromised the structural integrity of the towers, risking their collapse.

Additionally, vandalised 132kV underground transmission cables were discovered near Millennium Park in Abuja on January 17, leading to power supply disruptions in the central area and its environs.

TCN has described these acts as a significant threat to Nigeria’s power sector and socioeconomic development.

“Vandals and those who buy stolen materials are sabotaging the nation,” Mbah stated, emphasizing the financial and operational strain caused by the constant repairs.

The company has ramped up security measures, including increasing patrols and engaging vigilante groups, while working closely with security agencies.

However, TCN is calling on all Nigerians, especially those in host communities, to assist in safeguarding these critical infrastructures.

“This is a clarion call for collective action to put an end to this menace and ensure the growth of the nation’s power sector,” Mbah urged.

The company warns that continued vandalism will jeopardize its grid expansion plans, which are crucial for Nigeria’s development.
