Elderly Woman Killed By Drunken Driver In Lagos
An elderly woman, yet to be identified, was crushed to death by a white Pathfinder Jeep reportedly driven by an intoxicated motorist along Almaroof, inward Pleasure, Oke-Odo area of Lagos State.
According to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the crash occurred after the driver lost control of the vehicle due to brake failure, veering off the road and striking the unsuspecting pedestrian. The woman died instantly from the impact.
LASTMA operatives promptly apprehended the fleeing driver and secured the scene to prevent further accidents and ensure smooth traffic flow.
In a statement, the Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment at LASTMA, Adebayo Taofiq, said the agency quickly alerted officers of the Ile-Epo Police Division, who have taken over the investigation.
The severely damaged vehicle was towed for forensic examination, and the victim’s family was contacted using her mobile phone found at the scene.
Reacting to the tragedy, LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki condemned the rising cases of fatal road crashes caused by reckless and intoxicated drivers in Lagos.
He warned that such acts of indiscipline would no longer be tolerated and that offenders would face the full weight of the law.
“The sanctity of human life is inviolable. The continued slaughter of innocent citizens through sheer recklessness and moral irresponsibility is intolerable. Every motorist must imbibe discipline, sobriety, and respect for human life while navigating our roads,” Bakare-Oki stated.
He urged law enforcement agencies to ensure the arrested driver is prosecuted under relevant traffic and criminal laws and reaffirmed LASTMA’s commitment to protecting lives and property through sustained enforcement, public awareness, and collaboration with security agencies to maintain road safety in Lagos.
