Ex-Uniosun Lecturer Arraigned For Alleged Defamation Of Vice Chancellor

The Osun State Police Command have arraigned a 42-year-old man, Benjamin Adebisi before a magistrate court in Osogbo for allegedly defaming the Vice Chancellor of Osun State University, Professor Clement Adebooye.

Adebisi who is a former lecturer at the university, was arraigned on Wednesday before Magistrate Olusegun on four counts of defamation.

In one of the counts, Adebisi was accused of using his Facebook account to tarnish the image of the Vice Chancellor by alleging that Prof. Adebooye in the 2016/2017 session, presided over a 100-level physics practical manual riddled with gross errors and misinformation.

“That you ADEBISI BENJAMIN ‘M’ on the same date, time, and place, in the aforementioned Magisterial District did unlawfully publish on different social media
platforms including Facebook with the profile name “Benjamin Adebisi” tweeted across
Osogbo and the world over defamatory posts “……….Professor Popoola, far from being a victim, has a history of questionable conduct. The same man who, in the 2016/2017 session, presided over a 100-level physics practical manual riddled with gross errors and misinformation………” against one Prof Amos Popoola ‘m’ a Lecturer of Osun State University in a manner likely to injure his reputation by exposing him to hatred, contempt,
ridicule with intent to damage him in his profession and thereby committed an offence
contrary to Section 373 and punishable under Section 375 of the Criminal Code Cap 34 Vol.
II Laws of Osun State of Nigeria 2002,” the charge read.

In another charge, Adebisi was accused of falsely representing himself as a lecturer of the Osun State University with the intent to defraud members of the public.

The charge said, “That you, Adebisi Benjamin, on the same date, time, place and in the aforementioned magisterial district did with intent to defraud falsely represent yourself as
a Lecturer of the Osun State University in a manner likely to mislead the members of the
public, and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under section 484 of
the criminal code cap 34 vol.II Laws of Osun State of Nigeria 2002.”

The defendant also allegedly accused the Vice Chancellor of siphoning the interest on the pension of a Neurology fellow whose name was not mentioned.

“That you ADEBISI BENJAMIN ‘M’ between the 8th of February to March 2026,
in Osogbo Osun State, in the Osogbo Magisterial District did unlawfully published on different social media platforms including Facebook with profile name Benjamin Adebisi tweeted across Osogbo and the world over defamatory posts “………If you cannot manage
the pension of One Neurology fellow without siphoning the interest, you have no moral right to criticise the Central Bank of Nigeria……..” against one Prof Clement Adebooye ‘m’ Vice Chancellor, Osun State University in a manner likely to injure his reputation by exposing him to hatred, contempt, ridicule with intent to damage him in his profession and
thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 373 and punishable under Section 375 of the Criminal Code Cap 34 Vol. II Laws of Osun State of Nigeria 2002.”

Adebisi, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

In his ruling, Magistrate Ayilara, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N5 million with two sureties.

He said one of the sureties must be a resident in Osogbo and be ready to submit valid documents while the second surety must be a blood relative of the defendant.

He also ordered that the defendant should deposit his international passport with the court.

The matter was adjourned till April 14, 2026, for mention.
