Apology Not Enough, Compensate 2025 UTME Candidates – NOA Tells JAMB

The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has called on the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) to compensate candidates affected by the technical failures during the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), stating that an apology alone is insufficient.

While acknowledging JAMB’s rare admission of its shortcomings, the NOA stressed that such recognition must be backed by decisive action.

The agency described the situation as one that subjected innocent candidates to needless hardship, insisting that JAMB must do more to correct its errors.

NOA’s Director General, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, in a statement signed by Paul Odenyi, Deputy Director of Media and Communication, urged JAMB Registrar, Professor Is-haq Oloyede, to act swiftly.

“While recognition of mistakes is the first step, redemption and restitution are other necessary steps to be taken. Having decided to provide another opportunity to the candidates as a way of redeeming the errors, it is imperative that JAMB considers appropriate compensation to mitigate the stress and anxiety these candidates may have suffered,” he said.

He added that public institutions must take responsibility when they fail and that JAMB should set an example for others.

“When institutions own their mistakes and act to correct them, they earn the respect and confidence of the people,” he noted.

Referencing the National Values Charter, Onilu emphasised that transparency, integrity, and accountability are not optional virtues but obligations every public body must uphold.

He reaffirmed NOA’s stance against negligence in public service and said the agency would continue to champion responsible governance and accountability across all institutions.
