The former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, did make a Freudian slip when he made his now infamous remarks at the 50th birthday of the wife of Hon Leke Abejide, who represents Yagba Federal Constituency (Yagba East/Yagba West/Mopamuro) in Kogi State.

Hon. Leke Abejide has been steering it up in the African Democratic Congress (ADC). He clearly does not envision an ADC mounting a vigorous alternative position to the present setup. Fittingly, the  Chief of Staff to the President was the special guest of honor at the birthday bash.

It is clear where Bejide’s political alignment lies. There is nothing wrong with this except that he shows very clearly that the growth of the ADC is not high in the list of priorities of the Honourable for Yagba constituency.

Former Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila did not make a Freudian slip in his remarks: a Freudian slip inadvertently brings out the subconscious. In this case, Gbajabiamila nailed out a very clear strategic imperative which is now accepted in the conventional wisdom.

The goal of the ruling party is to make any form of opposition ineffective. Fifth-columnists,  agent provocateurs are induced and deployed to distract the opposition.

It is quite clear that raw materials are available and can be easily manipulated to weaken and if possible, deploy to destroy the opposition parties.

All of this shows that the ruling elite are not as confident about winning the forthcoming elections as their spin doctors will want us to believe.

They have their own private opinion polls and filter devices and they know that there is mass disaffection in the street, the market squares and in the public transportation systems.

This is why Gbajabiamila is asking Abejide to “Scatter them!!!” This is the only way out now for a ruling party that has failed on all counts.

Femi Gbajabiamila must be made to realize that there is already a mechanism to defend democracy and a multi-party system in Nigeria.

Democracy was fought for and won against a brutal, tyrannical military regime it will be defended and deepen civil society has been put on notice, eternal vigilance is needed now to defend democracy and all those who are against the tyranny of a one-party must rally to the defense of a multi-party system.
