MTN Nigeria has implemented a new data pricing structure, leading to sharp increases in the cost of internet bundles, a move that has triggered reactions from subscribers nationwide.
The telecom giant confirmed the development in a statement posted on its official X (formerly Twitter) account, explaining that the price adjustments were necessary to enhance service delivery.
โYโello! Thanks for stopping by. We apologise for any inconvenience and delayed response. A price increase has been implemented to enhance our services and serve you better, which is why you are seeing the updated amount,โ MTN stated.
NCC Approves Tariff Increase
The decision to raise data prices follows the approval of a tariff hike by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), which cited economic realities as the basis for its decision.
In January, the NCCโs spokesperson, Reuben Mouka, announced that the regulatory body had authorised telecom operators to adjust their tariffs in line with Section 108 of the Nigerian Communications Act, 2003.

Mouka explained that while some telecom providers had requested a 100 per cent increase, the commission capped the adjustment at 50 per cent to balance industry sustainability with consumer protection.
โThe adjustment, capped at a maximum of 50 per cent of current tariffs, though lower than the over 100 per cent requested by some network operators, was arrived at taking into account ongoing industry reforms that will positively influence sustainability,โ he said.
Subscribers Decry Sharp Increase
Despite the NCC-imposed cap, an analysis of MTNโs new data pricing structure shows that some bundles have witnessed hikes of over 200 per cent.
Several subscribers have taken to social media to express their frustration over the changes, with many complaining that the new prices are unaffordable.
A customer wrote, โHow is MTN improving services when the same data that used to last a month now finishes in two weeks? This is just exploitation.โ
Another user lamented, โHow do they expect small business owners who rely on data to cope with these outrageous prices?โ
