Lassa Fever Claims 127 Lives In 4 Months – NCDC
Lassa fever has claimed 127 lives across 18 states between January and April 2025, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has reported.
According to the agency’s situation report on Tuesday, the total number of cases reported in week 14 stood at 127, with a Case Fatality Rate (CFR) of 18.8%, slightly higher than the 18.5% CFR recorded during the same period in 2024.
The majority of the confirmed cases were concentrated in Ondo, Bauchi, and Edo states, which together accounted for 71% of the total cases.
Ondo reported the highest number with 30%, followed by Bauchi at 25%, and Edo at 16%.
The report also revealed that new cases rose from 14 in week 13 to 15 in week 14, with affected states including Ondo, Bauchi, Edo, Taraba, Ebonyi, and Gombe.
The NCDC said, “Cumulatively in week 14, 2025, 127 deaths have been reported with a Case Fatality Rate (CFR) of 18.8% which is higher than the CFR for the same period in 2024 (18.5%).”
The agency also added, “In total for 2025, 18 States have recorded at least one confirmed case across 93 Local Government Areas.”
Despite a decrease in suspected cases compared to 2024, NCDC confirmed the activation of the National Lassa Fever Multi-Partnership Incident Management System (IMS) to coordinate response efforts at all levels.
The agency also highlighted that individuals aged 21-30 years are most affected by the disease. “The predominant age group affected is 21-30 years,” it said.READ
