Recently, President Donald Trump signed an executive order freezing financial aid to South Africa after previously warning of such action.
He had earlier announced plans to cut all future funding to the country, citing “land expropriation and alleged discriminatory treatment” of certain groups, particularly foreigners.
Trump’s decision followed South African President Cyril Ramaphosa’s signing of an expropriation bill into law, which permits land seizures without compensation in certain cases.
In response, Ramaphosa stated that South Africa does not receive financial aid from the US, except for PEPFAR assistance, which supports its HIV/AIDS programme.
